How to Obtain an Electric Wheelchair through Medicare

The first step in the process is getting a prescription from your doctor. You will need to make an appointment for a mobility evaluation with your physician. This face-to-face visit must be focused on your mobility needs; it cannot be a general appointment. During your mobility evaluation your doctor will ask you a series of questions to determine if you qualify for an electric wheelchair or scooter. Listed below is what Medicare states as the medical criteria that must be met in order to qualify:
- A power wheelchair is provided by Medicare to a patient whose condition is such that without a wheelchair the patient would be confined to a bed or chair.
- The patient is incapable of using a manual wheelchair due to a condition that does not allow use of upper extremities.
- The patient is able to safely operate the hand controls of a power wheelchair or scooter.
